Our Amstaff mix is 3 months old and she chews, chews, and chews some more. We got her from a shelter when she was 6 weeks old and doesn't seem to have the bite inhibition thing down. We have tried it all. Ignoring, thumb under the tongue, saying "no bite", etc. This is our ONLY complaint. We also stick a toy in her mouth to redirect. She does chew on appropriate things but will bite our hands and nip at our face. Any suggestions?

Time and persistence  Probably not the answer you wanted to hear but, just pick one thing and stick with it..
We just always said ouch really loud, then followed by no bite firmly.. At three months they still got a lot to learn, still exploring there world and they only thing they have to do it is there mouth..
Gotta luv puppies, they are cute but man they take a lot of energy and time.. I like where junior is, he's to that self sufficient stage, where we can just play and do some training.. Once in a while still needs a reminder of what he is and isn't allowed to do, but gets easier everyday..
Don't blink it will happen fast..

Mine is six months old, and it seems she goes through weeks where she chews like crazy, then one week normal, then one week with more chewing.
I've found that to keep her from chewing on furniture and the like, I've bought a whole bunch of various chew toys. I keep them in a small wastebasket in the living room, and place them all back in there.
She takes one toy out, chews it for awhile, and then dumps them all out all over, and will switch from toy to toy.
It seems like she gets bored rather easily. More toys equals more opportunities to chew on appropriate things. |

I had the same problem with Bella. I bought her a whole bunch of toys, probably more than twenty. I keep them all in a small wastebasket, that she enjoys dumping over and spilling the toys all over. Anytime I catch her chewing something that isn't a toy, I grab it, say "LEAVE IT!" and place a toy in her mouth. After about a month, she seems to understand what it chew appropriate and what isn't.
When you catch the dog chewing something that is a toy, praise the dog profusely. |
