The red girl Kris likes is the one we plan on keeping and the brindle male Carly and Pat picked is going to live with Karma and her daddy.
Hopefully I will have some time tomorrow to get some real pics of them! |
How the heck people can make decisions based on puppies that are still fat little blobs is beyond me, lol! Can't see anything but color and head type at this point. |
I think thats why they say "plan" on keeping, meaning plans can change. |

Jean,
If you have seen enough litters out of your own stuff you are automatically able to seperate the litter at birth based on what you are looking for. Look at our website, we pick pretty consistently, lol. Anyway, they are 4 weeks old and 1 day today and we haven't allowed anyone other than Karmas dad to place a deposit and that dog is going on a co-own - that way if something drastically changes we still can change our minds, hence the "plan" on keeping. There are 6 puppies, lol! |

I still understand this thought though...any breeder I have talked to that keeps pick hasnt taken pick until 6 to 8 weeks. I can't imagine how hard it must be to not pick a pup before then...Just wanted to say I see jeans point...But I think that the #1 pup is beautiful and I like that girl aswell |

Carly, my only argument to that is that any breeder who accepts a deposit on a puppy before 6-8 weeks has already made a pick to an extent (unless the pup is white or tri or kinked). We both know plenty of breeders that sell most of a litter except for a couple puppies they sit on. The only time we have had a hard time picking puppies and sat on them for a while is when they were outcrossed and we had no idea how they were going to grow. With this particular litter, especially since I see and deal with them on a daily basis, it was pretty easy to narrow things down. |

It's not a problem at all! I think this entire forum should help people learn or at least see different points of view - that is the best way to form the best decsions for you (learning from other peoples mistakes or triumphs).
I was just discussing this topic with another breeder and they said they know people who hold on to puppies up to 14 weeks before choosing, but they also said it is generally when people aren't familiar with lines or fad breed instead of keeping consistent over the years. When we bred Havoc he was an outcross so we kept 4 of the puppies (Havoc, Ray, Shyne, & River), lol. We have been looking at our puppies for 10 years and Larry's puppies for about 6 (in person & including Flips litter) so we have an idea of who these puppies favor and make our decisions based on that and what we need for our "kennel".
I don't mind answering questions or get upset about comments unless they are really out of pocket .
We are supposed to try and take stacked pics later today so hopefully I will have them up this evening or tomorrow! |

I started a post on Breeders Talk about picking puppies. Hopefully you can get a few points of view. I remember being new and having a billion questions!!! Luckily I found a few people that were very patient and unbiased who were willing to answer them. |

Very cute. I miss those little Flippy babies! I may just have to go steal Flippy back again!
I like the little red runt girl, funny how there is a little red runt female in every litter Flip has produced.
My favorite is still female 1! But kinda hard to believe your gonna give up male 1, because he looks like he is going to be super nice too! |

Thanks everyone!
We REALLY like boy #1 too and were going to keep both puppies, but Bill has been looking for a second show dog (now that Karma is almost done) and he wanted either boy #1 or girl #1. A girl fits better into our future plans so when Bill said he would take the boy we said okay. This way he will be more socialized (Bill only has Karma and a mini-Schnauzer and his kids are grown) and Bill will show him whenever we ask him to enter. Bill actually doesn't want to breed and since he doesn't want a lot of dogs he wants something that might potentially go in the breed ring instead of having to keep buying dogs, lol. He has thought about specialing Karma, but she is his spoiled baby and he doesn't want her going to shows for a week at a time . We kept the co-own so that we can breed to him if we want. I only went into this because I am sure people who don't breed might look at the litter and wonder why we made the decision we did. If it wasn't Bill the male would be staying, lol!
Phil,
I can see you picking her and I think you would like her in person as well. She is a very close second to the female we are keeping and will make an excellent show dog (she has a really good attitude). |
