| I agree that vets seem to jump to the conclusion that it is something really bad if it is a pit(amstaff). In my last litter a good friend of mine took the runt puppy from my litter. The puppy had to be bottle fed but seemed to be in general good health by the time she was 6 wks old except a runny nose. I took her to one vet who is a big fan of pits and he said don't worry about it(though that ended up being wrong). Then my friend picked her up when she was of age. He took her to the vet and they said they were basically positive she had distemper because of her breed. The test wouldn't be back for almost a week. He told them that she had her shots and that all the other puppies were healthy. The vet proceeded to say that he didn't know that for sure unless he was the breeder. So he said he was Lol. He's not, but he was trying to make a point that he knew the other puppies were fine; which he did. But by the end of the appt the vet had convinced him it was distemper. The vet also didn't even consider it to be anything else and didn't run any other tests of any sort. My friend was very upset when he called me and I told him he needed to get a second opinion from a vet that doesn't have a biased against pits. He did and turned out she just had a minor nasal infection that was cleared right up with antibiotics. And of course that distemper test came back negative. She is now a very healthy happy 5 month old puppy. |
Just because the pup had one vaccine doesn't constitue it being "vaccinated", and also- it doesn't sound unreasonable that the vet wanted to rule out distemper, makes perfect sense to me, and GREAT that it wasn't! |

OH!
I haven't heard one mention of VOMITING In parvo puppies.... A LOT Of people notice vomiting before they even see the diarrhea, and while pups with coccidea, etc CAN have vomiting, it's typically not as severe as parvo puppies, and doesn't come on as fast, it's usually a longer term thing.
Like it or not, our dogs ARE more susceptible to parvo and other diseases as pups, so remember that. |

As an addition to the above subject...does anyone else follow a longer (up to 20 weeks)/closer (less time between vaccinations) vaccination schedule? The vet I worked for saw a high incidence of Parvo in vaccinated AmStaffs, APBT's, and Rotties, and used a different vaccination schedule which I follow to a tee. I was pleasantly surprised when the vet that is doing Tica's ear crop praised and reinforced my schedule. Just curious what the masses here think. |

We do have a longer vaccination schedule for those breeds you mentioned. Unfortunately, it is hard enough to get those people to give vaccinations at 6, 9, 12, and 15 weeks. We do have a few clients though who will listen to us....lol. |

| My vaccine schedule is 6 weeks, 9, 12, & 16, around here except for the vets I use, they say that schedule is obsene, and 6 wks is too young for vaccines and blah blah blah. 16 wks is when i have the rabies done as well. |

Just because the pup had one vaccine doesn't constitue it being "vaccinated", and also- it doesn't sound unreasonable that the vet wanted to rule out distemper, makes perfect sense to me, and GREAT that it wasn't! |
You missed the point of that , The vet didnt want to rule out anything..they said its distemper flat out. |
