| my husband and i are moving to charlotte in a few weeks, and once we get up there i'm going to look into getting another dog. I would like to get a border collie puppy. i was just wondering what steps i should take to get my dog used to a puppy. (i'm a pretty new dog owner, had cats my whole life.) |

| Other than basic introduction and making sure that pup knows that your older dog is above him/her in the pecking order (gets food first, gets greeted first when you get home), make sure that you can separate dogs when you are not there to supervise them. I think that would be the most important thing. I know of many people that leave their dogs together when they are not at home and largely it would depend on their temperament, but I separate my dogs although they are different sexes. |

PLEASE reconsider getting a BC.
Unless you are an experienced dog person and talented dog trainer with LOTS of REAL WORK for your BC to do, I would highly recommend not getting one.
They are a handful for the most experienced trainer!
Donald McCaig writes at the end of his book (story of his tour through Scotland to acquire a herding dog):
"If this has persuaded you to buy a Border Collie for a pet, I have done you and your dog a disservice. If you don't have work for a BC, or time to train it properly, your bright young BC will invent his own work, and chances are you won't like it".
They need MUCH more than leash walks and a backyard...
