We are in the process of adopting a seven year old spayed amstaff. Currently we have a 3 year old male JRT and a 3 year old male terrier mix, both neutered.
We've had three "get to know you" meetings with with the dogs.
The first was at a local park. The initial meeting went well, we walked together and everyone seemed okay. Our JRT showed some teeth once or twice but only when the new girl was close to his face. The second meeting was at our home. We went for a 40 minute walk, again, everyone did fine, sort of ignoring each other. When we came back and went inside, there was a little posturing by the JRT, a little showing of the teeth, and some low growling but only when they were very close. The lady from the adoption org. said it appeared to be normal as this was the JRT's home and he was letting her know that. They were sort of working out their pecking order.
The third meeting took place at our home again with much the same results although less posturing and teeth showing but for one instance.
My wife was on the floor with the amstaff and invited the JRT over, now they were all together with her and the JRT snapped at the amstaff and a small tussle insued which we were able to stop immediately. They showed no lingering signs of aggression, both were right back to calm and that was it.
The JRT has lived with another dog with no problem for most of his life. we have other dogs of all shapes and sizes over on a regular basis, sometimes staying for days and have never had an aggression problem.
My question is whether the teeth baring, low growling, and the snapping(although I really believe this had something to do with them both being in my wife's lap at the same time) sound like we may have two dogs that won't be able to live together or is this just a normal process they have to go through and work out between themselves. BTW, the little terrier mix is pretty much oblivious to all this, he could'nt care any less who's in his house as long as you scratch his belly once in awhile. Also, the amstaff is a real sweetie, hasn't shown any agressive behaviour to dogs or humans and is on the mellow side.
Thanks for any help, we really want this to work out.

Considering that most Amstaffs are either Dog aggressive or will become dog aggressive... you can never leave them alone together. Given that, all their time together will be supervised. No problem.

Thanks and yes, they would be supervised at all times and separated when we're not home.
Diva, (that's the amstaffs' name) is a real sweetie and we're hoping everything works out.
If and when we get her, I'll post some pics and formally introduce her.
Thanks again,
Guy
