Hello,
I just today adopted a Amstaff from our local humane organization. He couldn't come home with me as he will be getting neutered tomorrow. I didn't really set out to adopt one of the bully breeds. He stole my heart and really needed a loving home as he'd been through some pretty horrific times. His sweet spirit showed through and I know he will be a wonderful companion to me. Now that I'll be bringing him home in the next few days, I will need to make smooth intros to my two cats. My boy's bio reported that he is good with cats and kids. I'm so hoping this is a true statement as I do not want to have to return him to the shelter. I'm getting a large crate tomorrow for him as he is also reportedly crate trained. I'm not familiar with crating. However, my plan is to bring him home and let him sniff around the house first while my cats are safely shut away in a bedroom. I'll put him his new crate and get him comfy then let the cats out to come check him out. I'm only assuming that he will not be able to get out the crate and go nuts if the "good with cats" thing turns out to be pure fantasy. Of course, if the intros in the crate go well then out of the crate will be next. Whew! I'm getting stressed just thinking about it. Any suggestions out there about cat intros?? |

Did the rescue give you any info? Have they tried the dog around cats? Did you bring a cat in and see how the dog acted.. Did they know why the dog was brought in?? You never know, they might of brought the dog in for going after cats.... I think you are taking a HUGE chance, but that is just my opinion... I really hope it works out for you.. His bio might have said that and let's hope it is true... I wouldn't leave him and the cat out alone when you are not home. JMO

| I adopted a Amstaff/Pit mix from a shetler 3 months ago. He was 5 months old, and I was told he was cat tested. When we brought him home it took my cat a while to get use to the dog. I would recommend gating off a certain part of your house (ex only letting the pup in the kitchen and living room ) that way your cat's have a safe place they can escape to. My biggest problem, was and is, that the puppy loves to chase my cat. Now the cat is getting use to him, and just runs away, only to return 3 mins later! In the beginning my cat would not even come into the living room. He stayed in our spare bedroom, and refused to come out. I would recommend not forcing them to be introduced. Your dog will prob want to play, and the cats will get use to him. |

Try first just crating your dog with your cat loose in the room (make sure he can see that cat). That way he can't chase it around which most dogs would do when 1st meeting a cat. I raise mine with cats as puppies so they grow up knowing that cats are okay. If your dog is nice and calm in the crate when the cat is around then I would say you could start doing what JaegerMa said and like Meadowbrook said, never leave the cat alone with the dog (that is always a bad idea, even if they get along).
