 |
|
A breeder I want a pup from has a female due with pups over this summer but the breeding was an accident and really was never supposed to happen. Mostly because the bitch was not tested yet but the male is. I love the dam and want a pup really bad from her but I worry about her not being tested. I was trying to ask the breeder to go ahead and do her OFA hips - heart before the pups are born but will her being pregnant cause her to fail those tests? Should she be OFA tested after the pups are born or can this be done before the pups are born with reliable results?
Anyone OFA a prego dog before? Were the results okay? |

I would not recommend doing hips on a preg bitch, I would not sedate my bitch while carrying pups.
Also doing a heart test on a preg bitch can give you false results, but then you won't know if the results are false results, or if the bitch has issues.
Best thing would be to wait and see if they do a repeat breeding at a later time. This way you can see how the first litter has turned out, and see the results of the bitches health tests.
Also this would give you time to spend with your pup you have now. It's not good to have two pups so close in age. Concentrate on the pup you have now. This might not be the advice you are looking for, but it sounds like your present pup needs lots of time and attention. The first year is very critical to your pup, and if you bring in another pup, then neither will benefit. |

| No point in either test while preg. Hormones will make the bitch's hips show laxity during pregnancy and until after the pups are weaned and milk dried up. Her blood volume increases by almost half when preg, so even a Doppler ultrasound will show increased pressures, but it does not necessarily mean the dog has a structural heart defect. |
