Hey everyone..

I am going to start a tip / advice for the first time owner. So if you have any suggestions from feeding, potty training, crating or anything else please post it here.. I will compile a list and create a direct link to it on the site. Giving credit to all the posters...

Thanks

I'll start...

Tip number one:

Your new puppy will eat, pee/poop, and sleep. In no particular order..

Make sure when you are house breaking that you take him/her out constantly (every hour). Also make sure to go right after these key times: After eating, after drinking, after playing, and after sleeping..

Get a key word like "Go potty" or "get busy" and say it repeatedly until the dog goes number one or two.. Then reward the heck out of them for going outside.

When they have an accident just say "No potty outside" and take the dog outside and walk it around..

With any luck you will have a house broken pup in no time. They key is to get the dog outside before it has an accident. If you push your luck the dog will go in the house, the more it happens the more it will think its OK..

#1. Purchase the 145 page, $12 book, "How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With" by Rutherford and Neil. Now in it's 4th edition, this book first came out in 1981. This book discusses each stage of development in a puppy, from birth to 6 months. Each stage is described as to what is going on physically and mentally and what you should be doing at each stage as to feeding, training, exercise, play, etc.

Really a handy, easy-to-read, useful book.
