Put them down

THE rampage by an American pit bull terrier, which has attacked two people, proves the need to keep this killer breed off the streets.

Premier John Brumby has warned that dangerous dogs will be put down without a right of appeal by owners, which has long frustrated councils in dealing with these animals.

But unless the legislation is wideranging in identifying American pits bulls, which have been bred for fighting, their owners may succeed in frustrating the law by saying their dogs are crossbreeds.

Previous attempts to control American pit bulls have failed because many owners stopped registering them.

Laws to force owners to desex the dogs so the breed will eventually die out have also proved a failure for the same reason.

Owners who claim the dogs are not dangerous refuse to accept the evidence of repeated and horrific attacks.

But this new approach needs to be effective. The Government must look at all pit-bull types and require their owners to have them sterilised and kept off the streets.

This will cause cries of protest from owners, but the dog that had to be put down by lethal injection when it would not release a man's arm, is proof strong laws are needed for the protection of the public.

I wish actually that publishers would just trow in the garbage those stories and spank the smart ass journalist for trying again and again to bring this everytime it happens....

It is time that we see on tv and especially on news channels documentaries about the behaviour of the irresponsible owner and especially those dogs fighters and start redirecting the attention to the humain and not the dog...Getting Mickael Viks was a start and we need more busts advertised...it is time that investigators start looking deeper in what triggered the attacks as how a dog got in the state of mind of agression and see the extent of the owner's responsibility because a dog isn't mean or agressive by nature ( That's my belief and i stick to it!!!!) unless it proves to be handicaped by birth but i strongly believe that the owner makes the dog the way it is....

If by accident the dog becomes agressive because triggered by fear, agravation or whatever, then it is the responsibility of the owner to do everything he/she can to get his/her dog the appropriate treatment, rehabilitation so that his/her four legged companion become stable, calm and happy again....

I agree. We are never goin 2 win if the media keeps trying 2 brainwash everyone.

I looked it up on the net, last year in Australia out of all the reported attacks on humans 3 where identifed as Apbt which didnt even put them in the top 10. Cattle dogs (blue/red heelers) where the top dogs with 200 bites followed by Gsd. I just dont get why people hate bully breeds when you look at stats like this?

On the radio yesterday they where talking about this current attack and the bloke reporting said "I dont like these dogs and I dont think theres a place for them in Australia, we should get rid of the lot of em"

Thanks all - I live a couple of kilometers from where this poor attack occurred and the funny looks we are getting now when I take my dog for a walk (normally people shy away when walking the dog - I only get other staffy owners coming up to talk to us on walks) - So to make sure I'm following all the rules I can poor Mr Beefy now gets walked with a muzzle on (which makes him look more aggressive) can't win either way.

Hi peeds,
Last year or middle of year before we actually managed to get some newspapers to make corrections notices (small and somewhere in the back of paper) and to change their online story of pit attacks WHEN it was found afterwards the attacks were NOT by a pitbull type breed at all.

A few cases the owners had bragged about their dog being a pit, so neighbours commenting had told reporters the dogs were pitbulls. Other cases were dogs who looked pit like, so reporters reported pit attack.
In most cases it was found the dogs were NOT pit type breeds at all.

Of course the news doesn't make much of a fuss about correcting their reports as that won't get much attention.
When we were fighting these newspapers we checked hospital stats on dog attacks. Pit type breeds accounted for 3% of bites/attacks presented at hospital. German Sheps and Rots topped at 75% and the list went down (from memory) to bull terriers, cattle dogs, kelpies..

NOW for the cracker. When someone bitten attends hospital and they do NOT know the name of the breed that bit them..the hospital shows them photo's of dogs. GUESS which breed is shown first??? Guess which breed is shown more than once,,,from every angle and different colours, shapes and size???
It was noted in one hospital, that out of 10 pictures more than 5 were of pit types. Some dogs like labradors etc were not even included in the line up.

When some distraught person/child that has just suffered an attack is given pictures and has to pick which dog looks closest to the one that bit them,,,,and all they are shown is a German Shep, Rotty, silky/fox terrier, blue cattle dog and a bunch of different sized/different coloured pits????????

Hi Peeds,
Were I am in Australia we only have restrictions "until further notice"
I never want to receive 'further notice' unless it's good news.
If they bring in a full ban they will turn up with police, seize my dogs and put them down.

For each area they bring in bans, hundreds of dogs are put down. Even bringing in restrictions see's hundreds of dogs put down.
With the restrictions you only get 3 months to comply fully or your dogs are seized. Some of those laws you only have 28days to comply.

I know alot of people that just couldn't come up with a spare couple of thousand dollars to comply with the laws.
Some people found owners in non-restricted areas and gave thier dogs away, rather than see them put down.
Others put thier dogs in 'pit welcome' shelters to be rehomed, rather than see them put down.

Yesterday I tried to type in the 'basic' rules etc on the laws regarding restriction in my area. It is a 10page notice they send out 28days beforehand. It took so long that I timed out and as I clicked send I got the sign-in page...LOL
AND my area only set basic simple laws!!! and it is still 10pages!!!! and a couple of thousand dollars to comply with!!!!

The Australian Government has decided on whole sets of rules/laws for pit breeds and so far they have left it up to individual states/cities to pick and choose the rules/laws that best suit their area. As our city has never had a pit attack our city went lightly on us. Still hundres of people lost their dogs either to giving them away or having them put down.

I don't want to see that happen everywhere in Australia.
We have to fight the papers that are instilling fear into the communities.
We need the community members to back us and support us, not fear us!!!
