My 4 YO male, unaltered AMSTAF seems to stink, even after I bathe him, he seems to have a body odor. Is this something that other owners have experienced besides just me?

I have owned Rottweilers, Boxers, German Shepherds, Dachshunds, but never have I experienced anything quite like this.

Thanks for any input in advance,

Have you checked his teeth? Look and see how dirty they are or if he has any bad ones or any gum issues.

Things that make dogs stink:

Teeth, as mentioned
Ears, as mentioned
Full or infected anal glands - you would most likely notice the dog licking or chewing around the base of the tail, or scooting rear on floor.
Skin condition or allergies - any flaking on the skin? Yeasty smell? Does the dog feel oily?

Thanks for all the responses. His teeth could be cleaner, but that's not where it's coming from. The very next day after washing him thoroughly, he started to smell again. I would also swear it's like a body odor. I know that sounds crazy, but I don't know how else to describe it. It doesn't appear that his scent gland is full, as there has been no scooting or any chewing at his tail. I have noticed that he has been scratching at his ears a couple time, but I thought that was just from some residual water in them from the bath. They don't really smell that bad, but I will check and reclean them.

Does he scratch a lot? More scratching will cause and increase in oil production. That will cause smelliness and will also become a perfect enviroment for bacteria and yeast. Those will itch, which in turn will cause more scratching.

Yeast infection in the skin will cause a dog to have a foul body oder smell.

Yes a yeast infection, and it will often show some flaking or the skin will feel oily. Sometimes you will see darker areas in the groin area and 'armpits' and the dog will have a kind of sour smell. Sometimes a bath in Nizoral will help with that, but it's usually allergy related so you would need to sort that out to get rid of it. I am a groomer, so I see a lot of that sort of thing.

Another thing that can make dogs smell is diet. Different for different dogs. I had one dog that just stunk if he had anything with fish in it.

Diet was my first thought. I too have a dog that when she ate Orijen (all fish kind), she smelled so bad of fish. Took her off of it and only do chicken-based foods (EVO now) and she's fine. I really don't even have to bathe her ever.

If a yeast infection, what do I give him? Is a trip to the vet in order?

It won't hurt to go to the vet and have the dog checked. If it's a yeast you will likely have to bathe the dog in a special shampoo and let it sit before rinsing. Again, check the diet, as yeast infection tends to be a symptom, not the main problem.

Just wanted to clarify here, its Apple Cider Vinegar, not the plain distilled
You can rinse him with a 50-50 percent solution and also put like a teaspoon or so in his drinking water

My dog is having the same issue! I took her to the vet and she was deemed healthy and the vet suggested changing her diet. I'm currently looking to switch out her food although she has never had any issues before with it. I'll let you know if I come up with anything sucsessful
