Hello again,
I just have a quick question about keeping our pup inside during the day. My partner and I both work fulltime and at the moment we dont think its safe for our 11wk old pup to stay outside during the day (our yard is accessible to passers by, and also the neighbours have chickens down the back of their yard and I'm sure the adjoining fence isnt sturdy enough to keep dogs out!).
Currently he stays in a small, tiled room that joins the kitchen to the back steps down to the yard. The back door is glass so he can see outside and the neighbours can see him too when he passes by the glass....He has his little bed and blanket, newspaper, water, chewy toys to keep him happy but the neighbours say that he barks a little when we leave in the morning, and then starts again when we are due home.
I know the amstaffs are very people oriented so is it going to give him behavioural/anxiety problems if he stays alone inside all day? And is it viable to keep him indoors when he is older, given that I'm sure he would break into the chicken coop if he was left outside all day??
I play with him a lot when I get home, and take him out down the back and train him a little so he feels rewarded for being inside all day. But I feel bad for leaving him inside all day... maybe I am just a softy?!!!

Google "crate training".
Most here will agree that a dog needs his own home. It's best for you and even better for him.
Oh, and go buy him a crate that fits! You might have to get 2 or 3 crates before he's grown buts its worth it!!!!! |

i just had a look at crate training on google and my main concern is that he would be in there for up to 9 hours - too long for him to hold his business in!
Trainers advise that the crate only be closed when the owner is home. Crate training is not the same as confinement for extended periods. No dog should ever be confined to a crate beyond its ability to control its bodily functions. - from wikipedia |

| Your pup will be fine inside, I would also not leave 11 week old puppy in the back yard alone, they are so fragile at that stage. I would also not crate him. Expect however, that your pup will relieve itself somewhere in that area when you are away (so maybe you can set up a little "toilet" area with newspapers for him to use) as even if they are toilet trained. At that age their bladder is too small and I would not expect them to be able to hold it for 10 hours... |

| if you like it isn't necessary but you can leave either a tv or a radio on to keep him company but definitely get him a crate it is safer for the pup |

yeah wheather hes in the cage or the house he won't be holding it that long..
In the crate they tend to want to hold it longer that way the don't have to sit in it.. While if they are in the house they won't think twice about peeing or poohing cause they can just walk away after..
My suggestion would be start crate training, but you really need to find someone you trust to let the dog out in the middle of the day, at least untill its old enough to hold it for the entire 8-10 hours..
We had a neighbor and friends stop just to let him out for 10 minutes to pee and pooh, worked out great.. |
