We got our dog from the SPCA about 3 months ago is there a for sure way to know if she is AST or a pitbull. My aunt and uncle own two pre-breed pit bulls, and say that she looks pure. (i know to really tell you'll need to see a picture, and i'l get one up soon) She shows no agrression at all! I heard her growl for the first time a few days ago, and that was only cuz i was playing tug of war with her. I wanted to make sure that my husband and i are training her right when it comes to being food and toy aggressive. Whenever she is chewing on her bone, or a toy we'll take it from her and watch her reaction, and then give it back. she never growls or snaps. Sometimes our cats will come over while she is eating and take food out of her bowl, and she does nothing.
Our biggest problems with her is her chewing up everything, and she likes to nip. she never all out bites, but she will nip alot. And she's always under our feet. It's very hard to walk around sometimes, and she likes to jump.
I would also like to know y'alls theroy on letting dogs sleep in the bed with you. My aunt and uncle went through a problem with one of their old pit bulls. He became aggressive only towards my uncle. And they think it was from my aunt being home when she got sick, and she would let him sleep in the bed with her.
My husband and I let our dog sleep in the same room with us when we go to be, but on the floor. Now if he or I take a nap during the day we will let her sleep with us on the bed.
I'm also the more dominate one. She listens to me better than my husband. What does my husband need to do to make her listen more. We train her together both taking turns with the comands.
any ideas, and help will be awesome. |

There is no way to tell for SURE, but odds are extremely high that it is a Pit Bull. There are thousands and thousands more of THEM bred and registered each year than ASTs.

That sounds fine. Just don't overdo or tease her when you take food and toys away -- just do it matter of factly....

The best trainer I know LOOKS for dogs like this (dogs that are always underfoot!). These are dogs that want to be with you and are looking to you to tell them to do something....maybe teach her some tricks when you have her attention like this....I think there are probably sites on line about tricks. Also, the little book, "How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With" is an easy read and gives excellent advice on what you should be doing at different ages....

I've never had an aggression problem with a dog sleeping on the bed. If it makes you feel better, do what you do and allow her up only when you say so...

Not sure about that one....I would think the dog needs to LEARN the command from ONE person; then maybe go to both of you being able to give the command once she is sure of the action that goes with the command.

My dog (Skylar) is very good around food.. I make her sit and wait for her dinner when i put it down but not for longer then 30sec or so until i tell her to go for it.. Also i use to feed her and then touching her bowl while she eat.. this is to say "trust me, i am just touching it so no need to be aggressive" that way she doesn't care if I or anybody touch her or her bowl while she is eating,
The other dog (Bis) i had just rescue for short term is another matter! Bis get very aggressive toward Skylar when my dog wanted to sniff Bis's food while Bis is eating.
But otherway round Skylar doesn't do a thing so i feed them in their own crate until the food is finish. (same for chewing Bones)
Now Skylar is 15month old so i don't do it but now and again i would just touch her bowl for few second... Why i do it.. because i have children.
referring to the sleeping part...
I have never let my dog sleep on the bed... Some people do.. But in my opinion and from what i hear.. they get too attached to the owner if they sleep on the bed and could get too protective of their owner.
The dog (princess) i had long time ago before Skylar, Princess would sleep on the chair and bed or whatever and she did get too protective of me and i didn't like it because then i would be worried if she would bite anyone while i am not around, and she would all of sudden become agg toward someone that just bolt out of nowhere toward me, when i stopped all of this letting her sleeping on the bed or sofa/couch, she became angel.. no overly protective, and listen better.
Now.. Skylar refuse to sit on the car seat but she would settle on the floor or in the back, but Bis would jump onto the seat without me asking her to. Bis tend to nip people when given a chance or jump up high to people's face level and i would really tell her off (very annoying when she does this because it is making me and her and Skylar looking bad)
For the last few weeks, Bis had improved steadily because i have continuing trained her and set limitation for her i.e. what she can and can't do in and out of the house. |

Hi,
My dog was a playful nipper when she was young. If we got her riled up during play time, she would start playing rough and then grab for hands and fingers. The way we dealt with it was to not get her that excited, and stop the play once she crossed the line to rough play. That did the trick within a few months. Also, whenever she would play-nip, we would tap her snout hard with a finger and sternly tell her "no bite". Wouldn't play or engage if she didn't knock it off.
Regarding sleeping in beds and such; this breed is strong willed, and I found with my dogs that if you give them an inch, they'll take a mile. They will quickly get a sense of entitlement, and then if we did order one out of a "human cozy spot" they would get mad and go pee on something. Sound familiar to anyone else? So we just always have a clear boundry about such priveleges, and get our snuggle time on the floor or on the grass outside, she gets a really comfy bed next to ours, but never on it.
Worked for us!
Best, |
