I have a question... has anyone personally experienced BSL in their cities that has affected their ability to keep their dog(s)? I am just curious if anyone has any personal experiences with this and if so, how did you handle it?

Being a breeder BSL is always a worry of mine. Any potential puppy buyer, one of the first things that comes to mind is where do you live and does your city have any BSL issues.

I have delt with dogs coming back to me to stay till the owners could find a new place to live. I have delt with uneducated people that hate the breed and try to poison sweet innocent dogs that I bred. I almost went crazy on an older women that tried to poison one of my dogs that was living in a pet home with three kids.

I have been to hearings to support my puppy buyers and help them fight BSL in their cities. Luckily those puppy buyers, their dogs got grandfathered in where they live. I have had puppy buyers that have show dogs from me, that get harrassed by animal control, animal control threatens to pick up their dog and spay/neuter it without needing the owners consent. You better believe that animal control unit heard from me about how they would have one heck of a lawsuit on their hands if they neutered one of my co/own show dogs. Luckily alot of the BSL that has passed around our area keeps the show dogs safe.

The best way to handle BSL is to be calm and present as many facts as you can that back up our breed.

Thanks for sharing Kristine! I guess that you have definitely been affected by BSL. That is too bad!! It is fortunate that you were able to help! It amazes me that BSL can even exist!!!

Growing up in Ohio there were ALOT of dog fighting and Pits running the streets. I was one of those kids running from them. Then Ohio passed a some laws. One of them was all males had to be neutered.
Being that I had a good friend tore up by one and had a couple of close calls. I was happy they was trying things to stop the dogs from running.
A while back I made a comment that I understood WHY they did it back then. I got tore up from people. I don't agree with BSL. I am a ture believer that the owner should be punished. But when the owners are gang members and people that just don't care, then they had to do something. Most people don't understand because they haven't seen it or been around it. NOW I am not saying that I am for BSL. Not at all.
I believe that the owners of these dogs or any dogs should pay stiff fines and jail time if that is what it takes. To me it is the cities that our dogs on running the streets and a lot are human agg. Until you can make the owners responsible for their dogs, we won't stop the problem. You can pass all the laws against the breed but the owners that think a human agg dog is funny should be punished. IMO

We also had a guy that lived down the street from us that fed his pits raw hamburger mixed with gun powder to make them mean. And then we blame our breed. It is sad. IMO

Great points Larry!! That is too bad about some of the stuff you saw growing up!! I have heard of people feeding their dogs gun powder as well. Like you said, you can't blame the dogs for that!! It is too bad that there are ignorant people out there that are doing a diservice to the breed! I agree that the owners need to be held responsible!
