If some health tests came back on one of your dogs with not so good results would you immediately spay or neuter the dog, or would you still consider breeding the dog just making sure to try and improve, would it depend on what test and how bad the results were, or would you just not tell anyone and say you don't test because our breed doesn't have health problems??? (ok I hope no one picks the last option because that one was suppose to be a joke)

Me personally it would depend on what test and the results and if the dog in question really had something good to contribute to the breed and if a compatible mate could be found that could help improve overall and the issue in question.

Certain issues like Ataxia, now that is immediate spay/neuter and start over. Hopefully within the next few years they will come up with a test that will help target what dogs are affected/carriers/clear.

Depends on what tests. If it is the heart and it fails. Then the dog will go to a pet home. If it is bad, then the dog will be put down. I try not to hide anything. I will share anything with anyone that I deal with. For Hips it would depend on how bad. I never have had a failing hip (thank God) and that has never been an issue in my yard.

Ataxia, Dog will be put down.

You would be shocked on the people that still breed SAS, Ataxia, bad hips and not tell anyone. I love the ones that stud out there males with big issues and lie about them. That is what kills our breed. IMO

When Jack got cancer and then found out about his brother. I went and posted on the boards. You wouldn't believe people who asked me why did I go and do that. I also had a friend that researched peds a lot go through them and see if they could pinpoint where it came from. They couldn't.
I think sometimes you can put two dogs together that just doesn't pair up well. Both parents(Not Meadowbrook dogs) was bred before with other dogs and never had an cancer issue. But bred together they did. It is weird how things work in breeding sometime. IMO

That's what makes you such a great breeder Larry!! Very Happy It was so comforting to us to know that you do what is in the best interest of the dogs!! IMO there was nothing that could have been done to prevent what happened to Jack and that is what the vet told us as well! But it is nice to know that there are GREAT Breeders out there that really care about their dogs! It is unfortunate that not everyone does what is in the best interest of the dogs!!

Thanks for the comments. But a great breeder, not sure if I would go that far.lol But I don't breed for money or to live off of my dogs. I feel it is why you are breeding. There are many great breeders out there and there are many that are trying to be great. To hide things tells me a lot about a breeder and why they are in this breed.IMO

Believe me Laurie, when I got that phone from Craig. I couldn't feel any worse. As a breeder, that is my worse nightmare for a owner of a dog that I bred. So with saying that. WHY would anyone hide bad health issues and bred them on purpose?? I guess I won't ever understand that.

You know what really gets me, is the breeders that say on the front of their website that they test for this and this and that their dogs have to pass in order to be bred and their dogs don't pass and they breed them anyways, and the people that say temperament first and then breed dogs with *beep* poor temps. There are just some things that I will never understand.

There are A LOT that do that. I have been Beep at more for neutering/spaying certain dogs then I have been keeping. I hear the famous saying. HE/SHE is way to nice not to breed. Or the other, Just don't tell anyone. Then people complain why we have these issues that aren't getting better. And they wonder why. I do understand about doing certain breedings because you can fix things but that isn't the case most of the time.IMO

I feel that if you say you will test for something, you should. If the results aren't what you wanted, you don't necessarily have to post them and tell everyone, but if you are asked, you should be honest.

Ataxia is in almost all lines, but on ************, it's a long post but a good read and it narrows it down to alot of potential dogs/lines

*Removed, please don't link to other forums..*

there's another link I have to find and I'll post it later
