Depends on how his ears are set. Are they rose prick, "fly up" (like a German Shepherd), or flopped (like a Labrador or Golden Retriever)?
Flopped ears have a heavy crease in the ear cartilage so that is really hard to get to stand if the dog is older (I would not recommend trying to crop a dog with ears like this, it likely won't stand on an older dog because the cartilage is hardened and "set"). I have never had an issue cropping rose prick ears or "fly up" ears, those almost always stand with just a little work. I had one bitch done over a year old and her ears turned out just fine

why do ppl cropp there dogs ears...is it just for looks now days but what i heard was in the past ppl cropped apbt ears so they couldnt get ripped off in fights is this true??
p.s i beleive dogs shouldnt be used in any kind of unhuman treatment |

I personally crop ears because I like the look of it better and they do so much better in the AKC ring that way.
Don't get me wrong, I have finished natural earred dogs before (bitches), without an issue. But that bitch had PERFECTLY set rose prick ears of the right size. |

| I know someone who just got their dogs ears cropped at 7 months. They turned out pretty good, but they were how Amanda explained. |

I was thinking and wonder if this is the case....
If dogs were cropped because they have bad ear set.... So chopped ears hide the bad set... they then produce offsprings who may inherit bad ear set... (i understand that not all have bad ear set before the crop)
It would go on? How would we save the best ear set or how would we know if that dog with cropped ear had good ear set before the crop? Just wonders... |

That depends on the breeder and how much info they are willing to tell you. I can tell if a dog is going to have good natural ears fairly early in age. Even though I crop some ears, I still take into consideration what the ears would have been. Some breeders take it into consideration some don't. I have two boys here now at 14 weeks, one will have great natural ears, the other has crap ears. If I crop them both I still know which one has the good ears. I am actually starting to like the idea of keeping ears natural as long as they sit correctly and don't need tapeing or glueing. |

Thanks K... I'll remember that..
I've seen so many cropped ears amstaff and very few natural set and that made it hard for me to know which is good or bad.. I didn't take any notice of dogs ears set until i've learned about the standard. |
