 |
|
Hello I heard from a kennel here in Sweden that I should cut my amstaffs whiskers. It sound crazy to me as the whiskers are there for a purpose..atleast that's what I thought.
Should I or should I not cut the whiskers with a scissor or can I just decide by myself if I want to cut them, and if I do cut them will my dog suffer by any means?
my english might be a bit hard to understand but I hope you will get to understand what I mean.
Thanks for any advice! |

Hi Tuda,
Well, it's a personal thing. If you are showing the dog, they generally do look better with the whiskers gone (gives a nice clean look). Sometimes I cut the whiskers off before a show, and sometimes I just leave them there. It depends on if I really want them off or not. It will not hurt your dog to remove them with scissors, a cat would be a whole different story. But with a dog, there is not really too much of a need for whiskers. |

| Whiskers are a pet peeve of mine. I think whiskers belong on cats, NOT dogs. So I use the trimmers and buzz them of whenever I see them. It gives the face a much cleaner look. But really it's a personal preference. |

Do they grow back like a beard or is it a one time thing? |

| If you want to look professional in the show ring then definitely cut the whiskers talk to judges they will tell you in a heartbeat that screams novice to have your dog ungroomed. If the standard says leave the whiskers then leave them but on Amstaffs they should be trimmed |

I always buzz off the whiskers before I go to a show.
I've gone through spells where I'm a neat freak with my dogs (they shed one hair and I've got it off!) and during those times I buzzed the whiskers like, every few days. It was really good for getting them used to it. (In my experience dogs HATE the noise, they HATE the vibration, and they HATE things touching their whiskers. So the more used to it they are, the easier it is for me!)
I've since gotten lazier and while they still get deshedded, I can't remember the last time I buzzed whiskers.
Something I notice: If you buzz the whiskers it takes a REALLY REALLY long time for ALL the whiskers to grow back to a normal length. They grow back uneven and...yeah....it looks ugly. I don't know why this is. |
