Hello,
Great site here. We're looking to adopt a apbt/amstaff. We currently have two small dogs, one male Jack Russell about 2lbs and a 15lb terrier mix. Both are about 3 years old and neutered.
We recently found an 18 month old male pit, very social both with humans and other dogs. His foster mom brought him over to see how he would do with our boys and it was very enlightning.
Our boys, Jack and Pete have been socialized, get lots of excecise, (daily walks, play time), are very friendly and have never exhibited and DA.
When Coco, (the Pit) came over, Jack, the JRT, didn't like him at all. If Coco came near, Jack would snarl, growl and then snap at him. Coco would ignore that behaviour until after about 10-12 times he snapped back. Of course Jack would not back down so we had to separate.
Naturally, these guys could not live together so I am re-thinking. We really love this breed and would like to have one, or two, or... . But now, we're not sure how to proceed, Should we continue to try others, should we avoid another male, should we try a puppy instead of an adult or, is the problem Jack and is there something we could do with him to stop this anti-social behaviour. It's really puzzling since we've had Jack since he was 8 weeks and this is the first DA we've seen. Most of his dog contact has been with small breeds, I'm not sure if that's an issue. Thanks a lot.

| It is likely your JRT is going for Coco because he has not been around bigger dogs much, and another reason your JRT might be going for him could be simply that Coco is a male (neutered or not). I would personally try a small 8 week old puppy (a female and NOT a male) with your JRT. He should be able to have the female pup grow up around him and he will become used to her size that way over the months. |

Well I wouldn't count them out yet.. Our boy acts a lot different when hes in the house or his yard than if hes in a neutral location.
You might consider meeting on neutral ground and see how they do, then if the get to know each other a little it might be easier to introduce at your home. Just an option to consider..
Junior didn't like our cousins bulldog at first when he met him at our house. But after a second meeting in a neutral location he warmed right up. Now at our house junior could care less about the pup running around..
Just my two cents.. Either Way good luck.. |

Thanks for the responses. I spoke with someone else who is pretty knowledgeable and she sort of echoed what you said about the neutral ground issue. Also, the JRT is essentially an adult now and the Pit is still a young guy at 18 mos. The pit was intruding into Jacks space quite a bit and the JRT may have been "correcting" this rude behaviour. As long as the two were not near each other, no problem. The male/male issue could have been contributing as well.
We are going to look at another slightly older female. My only concern about a pup, and this is only from what I've read, is that you don't know how they are going to behave when they mature. I don't know if this is a valid concern as there is a lot of conflicting info out there.
Thanks again! |

| Not ALL males will fight.. I have two adult males that aren't Male agg at all.. But you are taking a bigger chance with the same sex.. Three males all together is a big chance.. Never leave them alone. And i know a Jack R is a in your face hyper dog on top of them.. IMO |

LOL, that's exactly right, which after some discussion, we've decided to stick with a female, adult as this is our first of this breed. The young lady we are looking at has the CGC cert and is a trained therapy dog so, I'm sure manners won't be a problem besides, the opportunity to continue the therapy training and put it to use appeals greatly to us. I think it performs a great service plus helps to educate people about the breed.
Thanks for the replys
