Remember on that one day your dog might not start the fight ,but sure he'll finish it. |
Very true, I was just at a dog show this past weekend and I had my dog on a whole one foot of lead, and someone let their rodesian ridgeback bite my dog in the face and that was after it tried to attack me and my dog the day before, after it bit my dog, I told them if they let it happen again that I was going to turn my dog loose on their dog. (I would never do this but I was *beep* having to go into the show ring with my dog having a bloody nose) If my dog would have been the one to start it, I would have been thrown out of the show immediately. |

Ellie trust me I understand what your saying.. An I understand where you stand on doggy day care.. Fact is that these dogs should be socialized! I am not saying to socialize with stangers dogs on the street, but to do it in a controlled manner, with freinds, family, training classes, ect.. Thats all socializing and will help towards a less DA dog IMO.
The question was pro's and con's..
I think Dog Aggression is a con and should be the first thing a new owener to the breed should be aware of. |

Here is why I don't believe in this anymore...so maybe you'll see my point a little better.
I used to think the same to socialize my dogs on leash to other dogs etc.
I'm glad that I was lucky with Maya she never had a bad experience...
BUT with Nico when he was just a 6 months old lovebug,I was walking him outside to socialize him with others,so as we walk a Springer Spaniel/on leash/ and his owner coming towards to us.
The owner asked me if his dog can say hi to my puppy.I said sure, assuming the dog must be friendly, right?
They start to sniff each other, tails wagging all the good signs, and the dog attacked Nico on his head, and bit through his lip.Of course I got him of as soon as it happened, but it already happened.
Now imagine my 6 months old puppy bleeding,terrified...
Since that day he is DA,because of this awefull experience.
It took me months to train him not to act out of controll when another dog is around.
I sure learned my lesson.
So it's cool if you think you have to socialize your dog. It's not my business.
But I still believe, our dogs should be taken to puppy classes,or to OB classes to be socialized-trained AROUND dogs, and not with them!
Hope you understand my view on the subject. |

ellie, I understand with what you are saying but I also agree with craig.
I would say the DA and high drive is a con for a pet owner. Craig didn't mean as a breed or a breeder. If you have a pet home looking for a dog the first thing I tell them is about the DA. That is a con for a pet home or as a new owner that might not know how to handle drive.
I have about three dogs here with some much drive that most kennels would take them. A lot of kennels that talk all about drive don't even know what it is or how to handle it. IMO
It isn't a con for the breed. But I know a few kennels that can't handle drive. Some don't like it and some try to breed away from it. That is what I don't agree with.
I don't think doggie daycare is bad if you find the right one and the people that are there knows about our breed and understands it. If you can find the proper place, I think it is alot better then the dog staying in a crate all day long. To me that is being a responsible owner. IMO
For pet homes. It is there job as an owner to socialize and do everything in their power to train, control and understand their dogs.
It is our jobs as breeder to keep the drive in our breed. Any breeder trying to breed away from drive shouldn't be breeding this breed.JMO |
Craig,I still think OUR dogs should not be out in doggie-daycares,dogparks etc anything that has to do with other strange dogs out of controll.
I take my dogs out to public parks, stores etc on daily basis, but not to introduce them to the other dogs...People?Anytime!
I train them around distractions out in these parks.
I never let anyone, except very close friends dogs, who I know,to come into my dogs face, because 80% of the people out there know NOTHING about their own dogs.
Dogs don't need friends out of their pack,IMO until they don't get a bad experience from another"friendly" dog, they'll be neutral to others.
Obedience has a big part on how your dog acts in public places, and not how many friends they have.
Remember on that one day your dog might won't start the fight ,but sure he'll finish it.
mabee this is true about some dogs but i think its wrong that you dont let your dog socilize with other dogs..in my oppinion the more they get to see other dogs the more they get used to being aroend themm..and if you do have control over your dog you should be able to stop the fight..i know that for a fact ...because my dog has gotten into 3 fights in the past six months and iv been able to stop them all because i have "control"over my dog |

I am confuse on this statement.. Your dog was in 3 fights in six months but you had control over your dog??
Sorry but if you had control over your dog then your don't wouldn't have been or shouldn't have been into 3 fights. Should have learned after the first fight. IMO.. |
