Scrappy was abandoned/lost, so I don't know how old she is, but I'm guessing under 3 months.
When we first got her, 2 1/2 weeks ago, she would follow us and nip at our ankles and pants; a loud low "No!" pretty much got that under control.
Starting just a couple of days ago, she'll be lying peacefully next to one of us, and suddenly start nipping at our hands, arms, etc. If she nips at clothing, it often looks similar to a dog chewing at fleas - in other words, she's using the very front of her mouth. When she nips at our skin, especially hands and arms, more teeth are involved - it's almost like a bite.
The transition from snuggling to nipping is usually pretty sudden, and now after a couple of days it's pretty annoying.
I've had short-term success by sitting with her on an old aluminum glider that I can smack with my hand to make a loud noise. It startled her enough at first that she stopped nipping, but it's not working well now. I'm going to make some shaker cans tomorrow, but I'm concerned they won't be effective for long.
I bought her a teething ring, and although she doesn't fetch on command yet, she'll bring it to me and drop it. If I roll it away, she'll chase it down and bring it back, but usually while I'm drawing my hand back to roll it again, she nips at my hand and arm.
She even chased and bit the push broom several times while I was sweeping the back porch this morning.
I used to think it was cute when she licked me, but now I wonder if she's just looking for a really tasty spot.
Any suggestions? We'll be taking her to the vet for the first time this week.
Thanks,
Steve |

Hey Steve.. Sounds like you have 100% puppy.. Enjoy it while you can they out grow it quick..
Any time she is biting or nipping, just tell her a loud no and give her something that she can chew on. Make sure any one that she does it to does the same thing..
As for the cleaning, well thats what I call it. Junior will come right up to us and start cleaning us. Its almost like he suckling for milk or trying to knead us like a monkey would for flees..
Its weird never seen a dog do it before. |

That may be the reason why she was lost or abandon in the first place.... Some owners doesn't have the time or heart like you do.
Keep on training her.. she should be able to snap out of it.. It can takes time.
Thinking back... every pups and kitten i came across had always play nip which can be annoying lol.. but that's probably because they do it with their siblings. They just don't know the right way to play with human until they are taught/learn how. |

I know what you mean. Our almost 4 month old Taffy does the same thing. I tried about everything and finally constantly saying NO BITE with everyone carrying thru on it finally seems to have sunk in (better than her teeth, sorry about that pun ) That and also the turning my back and walking inside the house or into another room. At first she would just go for my legs as i was walking away and i was thinking, well, this isnt working, but finally after literally weeks, we are seeing improvement. And we had the broom issue too. finally i just got irritated and threw the broom in the middle of the yard. She mouthed on the bristles for a few minutes, and then, maybe because i wasnt interested, she walked away from it. Now when i sweep she sometimes starts to go for it, i just throw it down and walk away, she pulls it out into the yard for about 10 seconds and then moves on to more interesting things. Hope this helps. At least you know you arent the only one!! |
