Hi all
I am trying to teach my 4 month old to down on command. He knows sit, come and walks nicely on a loose leash but I can't seem to teach him down. I have tried doing it where you kneel by the side of your dog holding the collar and then lure the dog down with a treat between the legs? He ignores the treat even though he loves them and tries very hard to keep me from pushing his shoulders down and won't lay if you pull his collar down either (he will sit there hunched over pushing back the whole time and won't give to being pulled downward). Almost seems like he is sort of afraid to be put into a down position.
Do I have to force train him down or what else might work. Obviously doing positive training with treats is not going to work with this puppy for the down command. |

Keep it fun for your pup. I cannot stress this enough.
In the stage your pup is in, if you frighten him now, he may never want to lay down with the down command.
I am working with my 12 week old girl, and she has been my biggest challenge. All my other pups knew down by this age, but she just doesn't want to do it. So I'm not pushing it. She knows Stand, Sit, Shake, Front, Wait and then some.
What I have been doing with her, is sitting on the floor with her, I have her sit, then with my leg arched just enough for her to lay down and go under, I lure her under my leg with the treat and this gets her to lay down as she tries to crawl under my leg to get the treat.
But like I said, Keep It Fun. Once it's not fun, your pup won't want to work for you. If you need to, start training on something else and come back to the down command later. |

With Halston we had to make him drop on his side first. So we used the treat and brought it diagonally across his body till he dropped on his side. The next day he got what he was meant to do. At puppy preschool they used a method where you sit with your legs out with a slightly bent knee and get the dog to crawl under your leg, following a treat. As soon as they are down you say "down" (or whatever you want I say drop) and then praise and treat.
Now I'm working on getting him to drop without me touching the ground! |

we have the same problem with Onyx at puppy school - he will sit, stand but wont lie down! its like his head is so big he can just lean down to the floor and get the treat without lying down!!
the trainer showed us the same under-the-knee trick and i havent had much success yet but we'll keep trying.. they are stubborn little things sometimes! |

Some advice that hopefully will help.
For so called stubborn dogs that don't like to lie down lol
First and foremost always have a treat
second put the dog in a sit, then with one hand put treat in front of dog held in your hand and lower to the florr while saying the down command, with your other hand stick one fingter between their shoulder blades and push down a bit, while keeping their focus on the treat and saying the down command. Keep steady pressure on the spot until they lay down, then lots of PRAISE and give the treat. Do this three times in a row daily, usually only have to do it three days. Do not push HARD between the shoulder blades. Do not hurt the dog, it is a pressure point but please don't go over board on your pushing. If this does not make since I will try and re explain it. |
