Is there any particular length the AmStaff muzzle is supposed to be?

In other breeds, the skull to muzzle ratio is written in the breed standard, but I cannot find that for the AmStaffs.

It just seems like on some AmStaffs, the muzzle looks short, like on a Boxer.

If this is the case, does this lead to problems in hot humid weather the way it does in the Boxer?

The proportion from nose to stop and stop to occiput should be approximately equal.

When in doubt refer to photos of the original dogs.

The muzzle has become too short on many dogs.

It does lead to breathing problems and not just in hot weather, but whenever the dog exerts himself even a little bit.

Here are a couple of websites on the head proportions of Pit Bulls.

http://www.apbtconformation.com/head.htm

http://www.ukcpitbull.com/headstudy1.htm
http://www.ukcpitbull.com/headstudy2.htm
http://www.ukcpitbull.com/headstudy3.htm

The emphasis on working Pit Bulls is on balance and moderation; the problem with that is that they look really kind of boring, like some kind of typical farm dog.

As for the mix of bulldog and terrier, I am reminded of the saying that a good recipe is one where you cannot tell what the ingredients are because they are so balanced and blended. These websites remind me of that. The problem with that, however, is that working dogs lack a certain distinctiveness.

We have a couple dogs that some people would consider Boxerish, but it doesn't affect them - they don't get tired or hotter any faster than any of our other dogs. I think it depends on body type, structure, and physical fitness. Nu-Nu, for example, has a short muzzle for an AST, but he has the body of a more moderate dog with nice leg length and is super athletic. He has no problem handling the GA summers and often outlasts other dogs. But if he was a lot heavier, or had less leg, I can see where combining that with a short muzzle can cause problems.

I also see a lot of people with bully dogs that have elongated soft pallettes (sp?). although they usually have no clue what that is.

I have seen many amstaffs with too short muzzle and 50% of them have breathing problems after a bit of training.

This one closer resembles the markings of amstaffs, still can't think of any amstaffs that look like this.

Though there is a particular line with alot of leg and comes with high tail sets, and produces alot of white, so I can laugh about the rumour of a boxer being bred in to add that leg LOL

When I read the standard which says "Muzzle - Medium length" I get a picture of a muzzle like the one described by X-pertise: "The proportion from nose to stop and stop to occiput should be approximately equal." But it is just my opinion.

i have never seen an Amstaff with a muzzle as short as a boxer.. If i did i wouldnt think of it as a pure bred thats for sure... Some do have shorter snouts yes, but not like a boxers. Also like what was just mentioned the SP can play a part too. If a amstaff EVER had a muzzle as short as a boxer then yes... they would have breathing problems the same as a boxer, but hey there muzzles arnt that short Razz

I don't think there are any AmStaffs that look like Boxers either, lol, but I have heard some dog people say Boxerish when describing a short muzzle with a lot of stop.

River has a shortest muzzle out of our girls that I measured at the time, but she has the most correct ratio.

Even with the shorter muzzle on the amstaff, it still screams amstaff to me, so it still has not lost breed type. You can look at that head and say thats an amstaff head. But I do see some similarites.
