I am going to get my Amstaff Puppy in three days and after alot of reading I still am trying to find the best way to toilet train him.
He will live outside prodominently so are there any methods of how I can show him where i want him to do his business i.e. in a slected part of the garden.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Hi, my pup is now 6m old and housetrained. I found Taz responded best to positive reinforcement, other pups may also respond to treats or a chance to play with their fave toy.

When he goes in the right part of your garden, lavish him with praise and affection, or give him a treat or his toy. When he does not go in the right part, say no, and bring him to where you want him to go, then reinforce positively when he does it right. Never punish your pup for going in the wrong place.

Taz knows the word pee-pee now and can practically go on command. After he goes in the right place, I tell him good pee-pee, good boy! And he just looks so happy and comes running for some patties Very Happy

That's pretty much what I did. My dog picked it up pretty quick. However, unlike your dog, my dog stays in the house so I took him outside frequently, right after meals, and no water after 7:00 PM.

I think that is what ill do, just stay around him after eating and playing to make sure he goes in the right place and praise him once he is finished, hopefully he learns quickly, ill give him a sensible part of the garden for him to use.

Thanks

Actually, my dog is an indoor dog too (especially important since we live in Canada where our summers are extremely hot and the winters are extremely cold).

All dogs love routine and a schedule. By watching closely, you will notice if your pup always goes 10 or 30min after eating. Now that my Taz is 6m old, his routine is a potty trip outside at 730am, then a long walk where he will go again (my friend's dog poops 7 times a day, omg lol! Taz is a double pooper, twice in the morning and twice at night. Younger puppies will probably go more often).

Home again, he is fed and within 20-30min another trip outside. Before I leave for work around noon, he has a last chance pee. Home at 930pm and immediate trip outside for marathon pee and a poop, dinner, another walk where he goes again. Last chance pee at midnight and he is good until morning.

I swear, you will be able to set your watch by your dog's potty breaks once you get a rhythm going! Consistency is key, IMHO.
