Hi guys.
My 5years old dog has been very spoiled by their past owners.
THey told me they slept on sofa or even in bed with them ,which I both dislike.
In past 3 days since she arrived I ve menaged pretty easily to make her sleep in her corrner, but now since shes getting more and more comfortable in her new home, every time I leave room she moves herself from wherever she sleeps to sofa ,and when she hears me comming ,she moves down, leaving obvious trails where she was.
Since I am new with pets in general I would like to hear your opinon how to approach this situation and slove it.
THx in advance
How to teach your dog, not to sit on sofa

You just have to keep correcting and redirecting. Introdoce a word such as "off" and point or shoo her off the couch if necessary. Remember to praise her as she does the right thing. Maybe buy her a comfy doggie bed of her own if she doesn't have one, or place a nice quilt or comforter in the corner you would like her to sleep in. You've got to be very persistant, they can be stubborn - especially when it comes to beds and couches. Bob

Not sure where you are Exer, but Costco do a $25.00 pet bed that my 2 boys fight over to sleep on since we got it....before it was ALWAYS the sofa...

When I wanted Harley to not jump on the lounge anymore i just put aluminium foil on the lounge. They apparently don't like the feel or sound of it. It worked and he didn't go on the lounge for a very long time.

Guys thanks for your replys , you are awesome here.
THis dog stuff is taking more time than one would imagine, but we are getting somewhere, and building relationship, which is reward in itself. I we placed nice blanked in the corner and shes sleeping there right now and last 2 nights as well. I am still having some problems getting her used to go there herself, but once I took her she is good. Am gonna buy her that doggy pillow so hopefully that will help, since am sure it will be more comfy. Other thing I wanted to ask is, are your dogs go always to its corrner, or pad when they are about to nap? regardless of time of the day? Mine dog gets sleep usully on the floor around place where I am. If am on pc, she will be within 1m on the floor, if am in kitchen same storry. I dont mind her sleepin on kitchen floor when shes there, but if we are in my room I would prefer her sleeping at one place all the time, since i dont like to re adjust stuff, people to her. Cheers |

My two normally follow us and sleep where we are, they are at the OH's feet at the moment, when we go to bed they will come and sleep on the floor next to our bed, unless the air con gets to cold then the come and hop up on their lounge!

We have (fake) hardwood floors throughout most of our house broken up by a few throw rugs and runners. Brandy's welcome to crash on any of these depending on what room we're in and where she wants to be. Only when she would try to claim the couch did we send her to her specific doggie bed (which is the one she spends most of her time on anyway) I do occasionally let her jump on my bed (or couch) with me if I'm in the room watching TV, but it has to be by invite and she must leave ("off" command) when instructed to do so. My dog used to have this problem also... He would hear me coming and only get off halfway so his back legs were still sitting on the couch and would look at me like "Huh". I was persistent with telling him "Off" and awarding him when he listened.
I also ended out getting a ~120 ortho bed for my older one and he doesn't even touch the couch anymore. I have the $25 costco bed also and my beagle has taken a liking to that and uses it instead of the couch. My dog always goes to his bed when he's tired.. regardless of where it's at. If I move it, he usually follows me and jumps on it before I can put it down. If it's really hot, he sprawls out on the linoleum. |

I had great success with using double sided Tape... he jumped up twice, sticked on the tape since then (3.5yrs) no more couch without invitation....

With my friends dog he will tell her no or off and she has now learnt not to go on the sofa. I guess it just takes a bit of time.

Whoever came up with the aluminum foil idea - great job, thank you! When my furniture got old and my dogs housetrained, I really didn't care that they liked to lounge out on the couch or loveseat. They've been doing this for quite a few years. Well, we just got a brand new leather sofa and loveseat and didn't want the dogs on it until we got their nails done. (no, I don't do my own nails - one of those things they're more cooperative with someone else doing) All it took is one strip of heavy duty foil along the edge of the new furniture and neither one will jump on it. Great suggestion!
*edit* I bought a new, better nail trimmer and did Brandy's nails myself for the first time. The wife and I made a game out of it. Karyn got her to roll over and rubbed her belly as I snipped the nails off one at a time. Did OK with her. The little mutt, however was still too squirmy and we'll probably have to take him to the groomer. |

Apparently this foil idea works great for cats too!!!
http://cheezburger.com/7017000448 ps: Bob, with Larry, try doing just one toe nail. Tell him good boy and give him a toy or treat. Next day try to clip two nails, etc... eventually you'll be able to do an entire paw in a day (and finally all four!) He'll catch on - - Anne
